Kathy Whitmire and Linda, circa 1977. My new sister-in-law had just learned that I knew how to operate a sewing machine. She asked me to make her a jacket and skirt, as she had a hard time finding business clothing for women in those days when few business executives were women. Our collaboration would result, a few years later, in bumper stickers reading “Dump Tootsie.” Hahaha. Kathy served five consecutive two-year terms as Houston mayor, from 1982 to 1992. Today, her brother-in-law John Whitmire serves in that capacity. As far as I can tell, reporters have never commented on John’s hairdo or clothing.
